Robotics at USC Upstate: LEGOS are used to Teach Basic Programming

In the SCSC 150 Introduction to Computer Science course at USC Upstate, the first Java program that students write controls a LEGO Mindstorm robot. The goal is to have the Mindstorm follow a pre-defined path that has been drawn on the floor. The students work in pairs to develop the Java code, record the actual path that the robot takes, and write a summary report with includes an analysis of the actual versus intended path. (Due to imperfections on the floor surface and in the motors/tires/frame of the mindstorm, the robot never follows the intended path exactly right).
